My proper name is Avernus Sephern Kain, though knowing that will gain you little as very few will ever know me by any of those names. The few friends in this life sometimes call me Av, but often I am known only by the color of my dress, Black. If you see me you may call me what you wish, but keep civil as I have a temper that you'd be best off not to provoke.
You might wonder as to why I dress in such heavy cloth and somber colors even in the hottest and cheeriest of places. I do so because my dress marks me as a mage, a practicer of arts some would call black magic and others simply do not name. I do not practice magic for love of destruction, nor do I seek power and glory; I use my power so that I might master it before it masters me.
To those that would seek to trace my past, I would suggest otherwise for mine is a tale of woe and misfortune. For those that choose to read on I will give you a glimpse of my past here in order to satisfy your lust for even the smallest scrap of knowledge. To start with I will say that I do not remember much before the events that awoke my hidden burden on the first night my sixteenth year;it is said that the magic wishes to keep a small part of your life pure, though I think that it does it to more easily corrupt the weak; however I do vividly remember the flames that burst from my hands the night I went to light my candle so the gods would see my light and keep me in their grace another year. They seared the church so badly that they had to rebuild, when they came to take me away I was like a daemon I wounded many of the clergy and guardsmen of my village before I was driven into the woods. Once my head cleared the next day I understood that I was an outcast, a man born to wander the earth until I atoned for my sins against god.
Years later at age twenty, I finally found my teacher, he placed seals around my soul to cage the power within, he also gave me my dark trench coat and the wide brimmed hat that people will often associate with my kind. The staff I carry I rent forth from a tree with, my strongest ability after the sealing, a bolt of lightning, this gnarled thing of oak I then wrapped in blackened leather and is still my primary tool to this day. My other gear is my long dagger which I have given my last name to, Kain, and my spell book which I call Agrona after the word my people used for slaughter and strife.
